Back in January, I heard that Mike Watt, “the man-in-the-van with a bass in his hand”, was coming to Memphis to record. So, I reached out to him via Twitter and much to my surprise, he responded right away! I asked him to come on the show and he agreed.
A few days later, after a few failed attempts to reach him, I’d given up on getting a chance to speak with him. I was home for lunch and saw that he posted photos from Cotton Row Studios here in town. I messaged him immediately and he replied back, “Can you be here in 15 minutes?”
Um, fuck yes.
I grew up on Mike Watt’s music. As if the Minutemen and his excellent solo work wasn’t enough to seal my life-long fandom, a few years ago he joined The Stooges, one of my favorite bands of all time.
Watt was sweetheart and we had a great talk. He has done more projects, or “proj’s” as Watt refers to them, than I can count and has sealed his place in history as one of the most prolific, unique, and respectable bass players alive. Check out this very special episode with the master of the thud staff, a sailor on the open seas, Mike Watt.
Mike Watt & the Missingmen return to Memphis October 27th at the Hi-Tone. You don’t want to miss it!
